Dehydration in children is a common concern, and as parents, it’s important to keep an eye on the warning signs and symptoms to ensure the well-being of our little ones. Proper hydration is the most basic for their growth, development, and overall health. Here are some key signs of dehydration to be aware of:

Reduced Urination

Keep an eye on your child’s bathroom habits. Infrequent urination or dark-coloured urine may indicate dehydration. Adequate hydration usually results in clear or light-yellow urine. In younger children, the number of fully wet diapers per day will be an indication.

Dry Mouth

If your child complains of a persistently dry mouth or expresses an increased level of thirst, it could be a sign of dehydration. Encourage regular sips of water throughout the day.

Sunken Eyes

In infants, a sunken soft spot on the top of the head (fontanelle) and sunken eyes can be signs of dehydration. If you notice these physical changes, consult a healthcare professional.

Lethargy And Irritability

Dehydration may lead to fatigue and irritability in children. If your child appears unusually tired or cranky, it’s essential to check their fluid intake.

Dry Skin

Check your child’s skin for dryness. Dehydrated children may have less elastic skin and white patches. Keep an eye on their overall skin condition.

No Tears When Crying

A lack of tears when crying can be a sign of dehydration. Tears are produced by glands that require adequate hydration to function correctly.

Dizziness

In severe cases of dehydration, children may experience dizziness or even fainting. If your child exhibits these symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.

Preventive Measures

Include water-rich vegetables and fruits in their diet. During active play, sports, or outdoor activities, pay extra attention to your child’s fluid intake. During winter and monsoon, it is usual that the child won’t feel thirsty. But educate them the importance of water right from a young age and make it a habit for them to sip water in regular intervals.
